This catalogue accompanies an exhibition organized by the Gregory Allicar Museum of Art at Colorado State University (CSU) in 2012, curated and authored by Dr. Eleanor Moseman, Associate Professor of Art History at CSU.
In the first decades following World War II, Postwar German artist Ellida Schargo von Alten produced drawings in pastel and charcoal that unite the illusion of texture with abstract form. In her artworks the play of light and shadow, mass and void, depth and surface merge formal concerns with surreal visions of organic nature.
Schargo von Alten’s drawings are enlivened by textural experiments that depart from the frottage and grattage of Max Ernst’s technique. Her abstract imagery evolves out of skeins of gestural marks akin to the tache prized by the Art Informel movement in postwar Europe. This publication offers a rare opportunity to explore the genius of an artist overlooked by official histories of art, as so many women artists have been.
